ATLANTIC BEACH BOARDWALK

This is our first project in the Atlantic Beach NC.  Our vision of what the future Atlantic Beach Boardwalk could have become has won the design award.  Many thanks to everyone in our firm that works hard on this project.

The proposal envisions a seaside boardwalk with multi-layer leisure space, with new amenities that reflect the city’s emerging populations and tackling these evolving needs.

The new mass timber multi-use pavilion will serve as a stage for outdoor concerts as well as provide shelter and shade for beach goers and other events. When not in use as a stage; it can serve as shaded place for families to gather for a picnic by the beach and for friends to meet up for food and beverages. It will also serve as the event center for beach volleyball tournaments, road races and other events. Other amenities include concession stands and seating on ground floor and the mezzanine floors.

The new boardwalk integrates with existing homes fronting it, with the landscaping features sand fixing plants and palm trees. its undulating form creates pockets for a diverse of functions, such as splash pad, shaded seating area, and picnic area. As well as a gazebo with small amphitheater for children next to the new playground. It also provides ADA access that extend 125 feet from the edge of current boardwalk to the ocean.

A new bathhouse structure accommodates five toilet stalls for women and two stalls plus three urinals for men. Eight open air showers are integrated on the perimeter of the structure, plus a family restroom with diaper station, an ADA restroom as well as a janitor’s closet, and two niches with drinking fountains.

The point area is designed with features including ferries wheel, carousel, and a large flagpole. We have proposed a public art in sculptural form at the point area. The name of the sculpture is phoenix rising, relating to the history of the pavilion.

The spaces between places, sidewalks and crosswalks and alleys pavements are also upgraded with landscape and
permeable pavements.

ARCH HORIZON WON THE DESIGN AWARD FOR THE JEONNAM CITIZEN’S SQUARE IN KOREA

The new Jeonnam Citizen’s Square will be a public space that touches the daily life of residents. Indoor and outdoor facilities and functions that rejuvenate mind and body are provided for all ages and at the same time breathes new vitality into the urban space. The design envisions a multi-purpose square that is sustainable, encompassing a great variety of vegetations, with visual and physical connections to the surrounding beautiful natural scenery.

Bamboo of Damyang-gun, tea plantation of Boseong-gun, plum trees of Gwangyang-si, chrysanthemum of Hwasun-gun, to name a few, are gathered here as a representative place of Jeollanam-do. These representatives and places of recreational functions are on or encircled by the “islands”; the element specific to the local context of thousand islands is interpreted here in a contemporary way for the design. The central square and the garden bridges of the Jeonnam Citizen’s Square are placed on the main Central Park axis, making the visual, physical, spatial and green connections with the Central Park; the forms and the geometries further continue the artistic grand gesture that gives the square and the park a new attractive identity. Sustainability is important in the design. A combination of active and passive designs makes the building energy neutral with regards to building-related energy consumption. Rainwater will be stored and used for irrigation and toilet facilities, reducing the area’s water consumption. This water storage, combined with the green roofs and permeable grounds makes water run-off minimal.

The new Jeonnam Citizen’s Square aims to bring vitality and innovation to the area through a seamless integration of landscape, leisure, commerce, and culture. It will be the landmark that showcases the best of the province, and building better lives with the people.

MALLS OF THE NEXT GEN

In recent years, it is difficult for shopping centers to attract people only by retail. The next generation of shopping centers must be readjusted and upgraded to improve the shopping experience through the integration of business format and internal and external space. It must be equipped with rich and convenient facilities and services, immersion overall design and technology to create a dynamic, attractive and unforgettable shopping center.

According to the current trend, most newly-built or reconstructed shopping centers adjust the catering proportion from 20% to 40%, and many adjust the proportion to 60% Entertainment + catering and 40% retail to create better revenue.

With the blurring of the boundary between life, work and entertainment, community activities have become an important key to attract people to retail. Skating rink, basketball court, gym, concert, carnival, wedding, library, classroom, art center and immersive space, IMAX theater and medical clinic have been introduced into the shopping center. The shopping center has become a community activity center, not just a retail center.

How to create and retain crowds has always been the focus of shopping center design. The novel appearance and space of the shopping center give customers the first impression. It must be able to attract customers and retain customers. The longer customers stay, the more they can increase their desire to buy. Therefore, when designing shopping centers, we often imagine how to make customers stay happily the entire day.

After gathering people, they should be directed to all retail stores, such as catering and entertainment distributed on each floor of the whole department store, Or set the catering on the top floor to produce the showering effect, so that the whole mall is full of vitality and people. In addition to indoor and other spaces, outdoor places can also be added to provide entertainment, fashion shows, or various exhibitions on weekends, which has become a key part of the local community!

Traditional shopping centers are inward design, while the next generation of shopping centers should integrate indoor and outdoor space. Modern people pursue a healthier lifestyle and environment. The shopping center can add green space or sky garden to become a new urban oasis! The new shopping center must focus on how to provide “happiness”, let customers leave good memories, bring people an immersive environment and take them to places they have never been!

HOSPITAL DESIGN

In English, the word hospital is derived from hospitality. In recent years, medical treatment has changed from “treating physical diseases” to “treating patients” including mental health. In addition to providing the best facilities to support the diagnosis and treatment of various departments, today’s medical system also place great importance to the design of the medical environment. With the continuous development and progress of medical care, the medical system and hospital architecture must adapt to this development and evolution. However,  from our past experience that this evolution is unpredictable, because we can’t understand it before the introduction of new medical technology or new medical equipment. Therefore, in order to adapt to the future changes, the best hospital building itself must be highly adaptable, so that the hospital does not have to dismantle and rebuild the main buildings when introducing new technology and equipment.

However, we can plan similar departments into groups from the beginning of planning, for example, set up “high-tech” departments and “non-high-tech” departments separately. When combining, we must ensure the contact and distance of corresponding departments, concentrate “high-tech” in several areas, and concentrate “non-high-tech” in different areas. In this way, the emergency department, outpatient department, inpatient department and medical technology department, The administrative department, security system and hospital management departments can be updated or expanded according to their own needs in the future, which greatly reduces the variability, difficulty and investment cost of the hospital.

Another important factor affecting the design of medical architecture is the medical environment. In North America, experts have studied the impact of the environment on patients for many years. They found that if patients can see the outdoor landscape from the ward, the need for painkillers will be reduced by 30%, and the recovery speed will be increased by 30%. The study also found that the recovery time of patients in the single bed ward is also faster, so the proportion of the number of single bed wards has an increasing trend. Therefore, the effect of medical treatment often depends not only on medical means, but also on the medical environment. We should change the constrained, isolated and painful space of traditional hospitals into an open, free and comfortable space; Change the lack of privacy in traditional hospitals into the protection of privacy, so as to eliminate the uneasiness of hospitals. Let the hospital provide a comfortable environment so that patients can develop stronger immune system to cure the disease, even if it can not be completely cured, they can recuperate quietly.

In addition, medical staff and visitors should be placed equal attention, and their mental and physical health also has an impact on patients. Appropriate decoration, greenscape, waiting and leisure facilities can reduce the fatigue of medical staff and the tension and anxiety of visitors. For example, in the floor planning, the waiting area for family members is designed close to the operating room, which is not only convenient to communicate with family members in case of special needs during the operation, but also takes into account the anxiety of family members, so as to avoid that family members often gather at the door of the operating room, making it crowded and difficult to manage.

Nowadays, the development trend of modern medical technology has created a larger medical complex, and it is necessary to organically integrate various complex facilities. In addition to using various types of signs, large hospitals should have clear route structure and convenient transportation to avoid the anxiety of patients and their families in finding a way, and form a pleasant convalescent community. Therefore, we can learn from mall uses atrium street for connections to various hospital departments, as a huge trunk or backbone. In the traditional hospital architecture, different departments are divided into different parts. In the atrium hospital street, when you enter the hospital, the whole hospital department has a direct visual connection with the transportation links, such as public elevators, from which people can easily find their destination. However, the advantage of atrium hospital street is not just connection. It is actually more economical to set up an atrium, because it actually only moves the roof on the ground floor to the top floor, and simplifies the outer wall around the atrium into an inner wall. More importantly, this will transform a hospital into a community, where there are convenience stores, flower shops and cafes where people can rest and communicate with each other.

At present, we are at the beginning of a new generation of hospitals. We should TOTAL DESIGN medical buildings to support medical staff to help patients.

英文中Hospital(医院)一词是由Hospitality(亲切待人)衍生而来。
